Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama
於2011年移師至橫濱,將M(Market,「市場」)改為Meeting(「會議」),建立當代藝術作品和創作者交流的平台。 (A Possible Path to Isonomia)》。 詳見:www.tpam.or.jp。
Founded in 1995, and formerly known as Tokyo Performing Arts Market (TPAM), this is one of the longest-established performing arts markets. In 2011, TPAM changed what its M stood from Market to Meeting and redefined itself as an exchange platform for contemporary artworks. To do this, they took the radical step of discontinuing exhibition booths and the dominant ‘buy & sell’ format familiar to most arts markets around the world, and changed into a nine-day meeting. TPAM is organized in umbrella programs such as TPAM Direction, TPAM Contemporary Classics, TPAM Co-production, TPAM Exchange, TPAM Showcase, and Meeting program. All of these programs aim to strengthen global connections and expand the opportunities for international touring. Most important is to develop a strong and coherent Asia Network for performing arts. Moreover, TPAM is also a place for professionals to meet and exchange information across Asia and internationally. In 2015, TAPM took on the focus of promoting Asian contemporary performing arts by developing the concept of meaningful collaboration through TPAM Direction. Each year it appoints a few active arts producers from Asian to curate the Asian programs, showcasing their uniqueness to the audiences in Asia and the world. Ever since, it is on its way to becoming one of the most influential performing arts platforms. This year, Hong Kong dance-maker Greenmay@ Body Lab for Priori Tropism’s A Possible Path to Isonomia was part of TPAM Showcase. Created with soundscape artist Paul Yip and photographer Jesse Clockwork, the work, based on the recent social movement in Hong Kong, was presented at the Yokohama Creative Centre (YCC).
Yokohama Dance Collection
Besides TPAM, another well-established festival is held during the period of January to February in Yokohama. Yokohama Dance Collection founded in 1996 developed a well-known dance competition (previously known as Yokohama Dance Platform) within a festival framework. The goal of the competition is to promote contemporary dance and to discover and encourage promising young choreographers. This year, it added a new component of showcasing collaborative programs with other Asian dance festivals and provided more performing opportunities. All these efforts are aimed at developing the festival into a shared dance platform for Asia. Every year, on the average, there are hundreds of entries for the competition, mainly from Japan and other Asian areas such as South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Hong Kong. A judging committee sets-up the procedures and criteria for selection, which is done through video submission, and they choose about twenty finalists that are divided into two groups. After which, the finalist pieces are presented in Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No. 1 in February. Hong Kong choreographer Yuri Ng’s Boy Story was one of the double winning works in 1998 and Hong Kong-based artists Yang Hao and Alice Rensy’s Outspoken was a finalist in 2015.
